Fiat Punto – the car with fine touches

The third generation of the Punto, internal name Project 199, was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2005. The Grande Punto had made its way in the Indian market in June 2009 but the actual launch was delayed in India mainly to strengthen its dealer network across the country. The brand has always been optimistic about the reviews of the car even before its launch in the country.

FIAT Punto Review

The ultimate design:
This new line shares the platform with the Linea, and has been developed in cooperation with the legendary designer Giugiaro of Fiat Style Centre and Ital Design. Fiat Punto has been designed basically on the SCCS platform and is known for its aggressive design with lots of Italian flair that is clearly reflected. The ultra modern design has given it a much better stance when compared to most of the counterparts. The most interesting is the fascia of the car which is embellished by the chrome-plated front grille with the red and silver Fiat badge at centre. It is also known for the leaf-shaped headlamps that extend up to the front fenders. The new version enjoys wide windshield with a sheer rake while the hood exhibits a gentle crown. Boldness is added to its design with overhung front end, shallow greenhouse and flared wheelarches.

Fiat Punto interiors:
The interior is more or less inspired from its sibling the Fiat Linea and the inside of the Punto is ergonomically designed with grey and black dual tone interiors. Matching the Linea, the interiors are clean and decent with the finish of plastics. The Punto logo is stitched on the seats and the floor mats for a familiar Fiat feel. Furthermore, the orange backlit instrument cluster enjoys four dials with a digital odometer.

It also has a trip meter to read out trip time, mileage, and more interesting to read trip time for two trips. It has the same single CD Blaupunkt music system and 6 speakers just like that in Fiat Linea. However, the Blue&Me package is available in the Emotion Pack variant.
Users can also enjoy height adjustable driver seats and tilt-adjustable steering. Driver’s seat offers maximum comfort even during long rides. Ironically the large windshield increases the front visibility but the thick C-pillar and small rear windshield cause a reduction in rear-end visibility.

Fiat Punto Engine and Transmission
It is available with two petrol engines – 1.2-litre and the 1.4-litre. On the other hand, the diesel variant is the 1.3-litre mill and based on multijet technology (with 75bhp but also with an option of 90bhp).

Like Linea, the 1.4-litre FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine) is 1368cc, 16-valve engine which produces a maximum torque of 115Nm@4500rpm after cranking up 90bhp@6000rpm. This modern high stroke engine is highly refined with very low NVH levels but feels a bit sluggish at low rpm. When you drive the car above 3000rp, you will get superior engine performance.

The turbo lag on the multijet engines is with issues just like that of Linea, or Tata’s Indigo Manza or the Indica Vista which share the same platform. But it is a little better with the additional sweet-15 horses and gives fantastic performance when you drive above 1800rpm.

Like Tata Indica Vista SAFIRE, Fiat has used the 8-valve 1172cc, 68bhp petrol engine and the same Fiat gearbox and gives a more drivable experience in the town.

Driving dynamics
As already known, the Fiat cars are famous for composed ride and agile handling. Even the Punto is no different from the rest and offers a firm and composed ride at low as well as high speeds. The steering is fairly accurate with light and easy option to steer at lower speeds.

Fiat Punto Pricing
The price of the Fiat Punto starts at Rs. 5,12,501 which is quite budget friendly and affordable with all the necessary features.

The conclusion
It is a great competitor for Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ritz and also to Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz and Skoda Fabia upto a certain with size and fitment being considered. This is a value for money package which offers a great ride to the family of four adults.
